NEW YORK, OCT. 9--Hank Bauer's homer that was only inches fair and Bob Turley's brilliant four-hit pitching evened the World Series at three games each today with a 3-2 New York Yankee victory over Milwaukee.
Turley threw a masterful game, blending his zipping fast ball with a slow curve and slider to save the Yanks from elimination. The reformed scatter-arm righthander, who failed to last two innings in Milwaukee, ended the game with a flourish by starting a double play on a ball hit back to the box by Wes Covington. He walked only two and fanned eight Braves.
Warren Spahn's illness probably will force Manager Fred Haney to call on Lew Burdette, already a two-time winner, to pitch for the Braves. The fidgety right-hander who shut out the Yankees 1-0 Monday at Milwaukee will be working with only two days rest.
Larsen, winner of the third game of this series in relief, will be the Yankee starter in tomorrow's seventh game at the stadium.
Spahn, winner of the 10-inning Sunday thriller, was bedded down in a hotel room with the grippe today.
