The smiling-faced optimists who had picked the Harvard football team for as high as fifth place in the Ivy League this fall received a serious shock this week when it was learned that because of scholastic difficulties Leo Daley and John Copeland would be ineligible for duty in the Harvard football "Big Top." On the basis of last year's performances, Daley and Copeland were expected to hold down starting positions at quarter-back and end respectively.
Speculators immediately recalled coach Lloyd Jordan's words in last week's Sports Illustrated, "Many lines are needed to keep it (the football Big-Top) from falling." Could it be that Daley and Copeland were two of the main lines which Jordan was counting on this fall?
Harvard alumni all over the world are hoping not, for as Jordan ominously pointed out. "Let one line loosen, and all the others will loosen too." Although Jordan was quoted with reference to the present ethical crisis in college football, observers fear that his association with the College has lead him to attach several secondary sub-meanings to his portentous words.
