Varsity 150 Crew Defeats Big Red

The varsity lightweight crew avenged last week's Eastern Sprints loss to Cornell in the fading twilight Saturday as they handily took the Big Red over an uncertain three-quarter mile distance which ended at Dunster House. Time was 3:58.9, three and a half seconds ahead of Cornell.

Fresh twilight gusts whipped the Charles River Basin into an unrowable sweat, and the freshman race did not get under way on the improvised upstream course until well after 6 p.m. The Yardlings also won, by slightly less than a length, in 3:57.4.

The junior varsity race was called a dead heat by referees, although it appeared that the Crimson got away late from the stake-beatless starting line. Time for both Cornell and the Crimson was 3:42.8.

The varsity grabbed a lead of about two seats early in the race, increased it to half a length with about a half mile to go, and won going away. A stiff tail wind pushed the two crews up the stream.
