The varsity heavyweight crew lost to Cornell by about three lengths, while the lightweights lost to Princeton by a length in the E.A.R.C. Sprints at Washington and Princeton Saturday.

Harvey Love's heavies, second to the Tigers by about a length and two-thirds in the morning qualifying round, never seriously figured in the final, and trailed winner Cornell, Yale, Penn, and Princeton. Winning time was 6:10.0 over the 2,000 metre Potomac course.

The hectic duel between Cornell and Yale, in which the Big Red emerged victorious by a scant two feet, was a reversal of last week's Carnegie Cup race, when loser Cornell caught a crab at the finish. Yale apparently caught one this week about four strokes from the finish, and this possibly spelled the difference.

Only Princeton and Navy provided early threats to Cornell and Yale. The Elis took the lead initially, were overtaken at the 1,000 metre mark, and then staged a blistering stroke-for-stroke fight (at a 36) down to the wire to finish six-tenths seconds behind Cornell.

J.V.'s Finish Third

The Crimson junior varsity finished by abouttwo lengths in the qualifying heat, trailing Cornell, the eventual J.V.Sprints winner, and M.I.T. Cornell was clocked at 6:54.6. The Crimson heavyweight freshman boat, a surprise finalist according to seedings, finished fifth behind Navy, Yale, Princeton, and Penn. Navy covered the course in 6:35.6.

In the 150-pound crew races at Princeton, the Tiger varsity again broke the Lake Carnegie Henley distance record in edging Cornell, the Crimson, and Yale. It chopped two and eight-tenths seconds off the Goldthwait Cup time it made last week in defeating the Crimson; the Tigers were clocked at 6:31.

Crimson J.V.'s Nipped

The Cornell junior varsity 150's nipped the Crimson by about two feet after a see-saw duel. Winning time was 6:47.3. The Yardling lightweights finished third behind Princeton and M.I.T., the Princeton cub eight winning in 6:44.8. The Yardling time was 6:59.3.

In the varsity 150's race, the Tigers led the field all the way. Although Cornell posted the fastest time (6.40) in the morning qualifying rounds, the Big Red was unable to catch Princeton, which posted its fourth win of the year.
