The varsity lacrosse squad again collapsed in the final period and fell before Cornell, 12 to 9, Saturday in a sloppy, poorly-officiated contest. Captain Dexter Lewis led the attack with three goals and two assists, while Don Dawidoff had three scores and an assist.
Thirty-four penalties were called in the slow-moving match, 22 against the Crimson. The referees demonstrated their ignorance in the final period on a disputed call in which Lewis and Golas were ejected from the contest after a brief altercation. The disagreement was quietly settled by consulting a convenient rules book.
Lewis took a pass from Dawidoff to open the scoring in the first period, and Dawidoff made it 2 to 0 a half-minute later. Following this, a Golas-Murphy combination gave Cornell its first score.
The Big Red quickly took the lead with three tallies in the first five minutes of the second stanza. Mike Shaw and Jim Gale scored to bring the match to 4 to 5 at the half.
Goals by Dawidoff (from Lewis) and Lewis unassisted put the varsity ahead early in the third quarter. Black and Temison countered for Cornell but Lewis tied the score at 7-all as the period ended.
The varsity defense disintegrated and the Big Red opened the final period with five straight goals before Lewis and Golas were ousted. Dub Mallonee and Dawidoff scored the last two Crimson tallies, despite the absence of the varsity's potent captain.
Harvard Scoring--
Lewis 3, Dawidoff 3, Shaw, Gale, Mallonee. Assists: Lewis 2, Dawidoff, Gale, Coburn.
Cornell Scoring--
Murphy 4, Grumman 3, Black 2, Hinchcliff, Temison, Golas.
