After crushing a weak MIT tennis team and brushing past a mediocre Brown aggregation, the varsity tennis squad was no closer than it was two days ago to telling how it stood in relation to the tough competition which it will face this season. Both Brown and MIT were very weak and gave little competition to what appears to be a powerful Crimson team.
MIT could only manage to muster up an average of three games per match to throw at the varsity Wednesday as the Engineers bowed by a 15-0 score. Only Steve Gottlieb and Maynard Canfield had to resort to more than ten games to win a set, and the fifth doubles combine of Captain Brooks Harris and Gottlieb took their match without the loss of a game.
Yesterday against Brown, the opposition was only slightly tougher, as the Crimson swept to a quick 9-0 victory. The one bright spot in the painfully easy win was the performance of Steve Kay and Ian Gianetti at first doubles. Normally a third of fourth doubles combine, they toppled Brown's top pair, George Kirkpatrick and Dwight Seward, in three sets.
Harris Wins
At first singles, Harris defeated Kirkpatrick 6-3, 6-4, to start the varsity on its way. Dale Junta and Cal Place were the only players to go into extra games. Junta, in the second spot, downed Ed Flatteau 6-1, 9-7, while Place at number six topped Phil Mehler, 6-4, 9-7.
The remaining singles matches were won by Ham Gravem, Connie Fisher, and Maynard Canfield at third, fourth, and fifth singles respectively. Each of these encounters was taken by a 6-1, 6-3 score.
