The Freshman Smoker should be abolished if the University agrees to give all students a vacation at the end of the mid-year examination period, the Smoker Investigating Committee declared in a report submitted yesterday to the Freshman Union Committee.
"If a mid-term vacation is not granted by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, this committee strenously recomends that a modified smoker be held," the report stated.
Results of the Union Committee's poll of Yard proctorial units showed only one recommended abolishment while 11 of 26 favored continuation of present Smoker arrangements. Nine advocated some changes and five made no specific proposals.
The investigating committee, headed by William J. Dean '59, saw the two useful purposes of the Smoker as a tension reliever and a chance to unite the class. A real mid-term vacation rather than the present one day holiday would effectively serve as a tension reliever and be preferable to the majority of the freshman class, it advised.
A class function in the fall such as a picnic, a Jubilee or a get-acquainted party also would serve to unite the class, the committee said. The present entry system allows little chance for unified social activities such as the Houses have, the report added.
