The Student Council last night yielded to severe economic pressure, slashing its Domestic Scholarship appropriation by two thirds, and voting to cancel the final issue of "The Harvard Quarterly Review."
The Domestic Scholarship, awarded for the Council by the Financial Aid Office to an outstanding figure in extra-curricular activities lacking the academic standing necessary for a College stipend, last year amounted to $1500 split three ways. This year, a total of only $500 will be awarded.
The second economy move, suspending publication of the "Review" until after next fall's fund-raising drive, followed nearly two hours of discussion as to the general effectiveness of the magazine as a means of disseminating information on Council activities, and the appropriateness of this aim.
The cut in scholarship appropriation was sharply criticized by Merom Brachman '58, but Council Secretary Albert Hofeld '58, asserted that even the $500 appropriation might well leave the Council with a $200 deficit in June.
