"A big, slashing, scrapping, and fighting Syracuse lacrosse team," according to Coach Bruce Munro, swept to a 20-5 victory over the varsity on the Business School Field last Saturday in the Crimson's first official contest of the season.

Syracuse's midfield, Jimmy Brown, a football star and Olympic decathlon entrant, "dominated play" during the whole game, Munro said. The Crimson squad was handicapped by the fact that Captain Dexter Lewis was playing with a hand injury and missed an entire quarter of play.

"Their team was just too strong for us," concluded Munro, who nevertheless praised the playing of Gardner "Dubber" Mallonee in the front line and Jim Herscot in the defense. The backfield consolidated in the third period, Munro stated, but could not prevent the Orange attack from scoring.

The Crimson's high scorer was second-stringer Mallonee, a sophomore, with three goals, two in the second and one in the fourth period. Munro called Mallonee one of the outstanding players of the afternoon.

Lewis and Fuzzy Stewart followed with one point each. Lewis also made the assist for Stewart's fourth-period scoring throw.

Along with Brown, attack man Stu Lindsay sparkplugged the Syracuse team. Lindsay, who played second-string All-American last year, was higher scorer for the game with a total of six goals and one assist. The Orange team scored four times in the first period, five times in the second, four times in the third, and seven times in the fourth.

The varsity's starting lineup included Lewis, Larry Coburn, and Don Dawidoff in the front line; Jim Gale, Mac Hyde, and sophomore Deek Smith in midfield; Herscot, Roger Martin, and Fred Scharf in defense positions; and Mark Rhine playing inside the crease.

The team's next game is against the Boston Lacrosse Club on Thursday.
