Arthur E. Sutherland, Bussey Professor of Law, last night praised the announced revision of the Fund for the Republic's "Bibliography on the Communist Problem in the United States."
At the same time, Sutherland termed the decision to omit a revision of the companion work, a digest of court cases on Communism, a significant failure. If anything, the digest of cases becomes obsolete quicker than the bibliography, he said.
Sutherland and Charles Fairman, professor of Law, were members of the original committee that compiled both books. In January 1955, shortly before the bibliography was completed, Sutherland had warned that it would have to be updated periodically to maintain its value as a reference volume.
Professor Joel Seidman, of the University of Chicago, will have direct charge of the revision under the supervision of Clinton Rossiter, a Cornell University professor. Sutherland praised Rossiter as exceptionally able and well qualified for the task of revision.
Robert M. Hutchins, President of the Fund, announced Thursday that the board of directors had allotted $25,000 for preparation and distribution of the revised edition of the 474-page work.
The revision will be conducted as part of a study of communism in the United States now being made by Rossiter and several assistants. This study of Communism has been an object of special attention by the Fund of the Republic, which has already ear-marked enough funds to pay for it in its entity.
