The Harvard Union Committee has unanimously recommended extension of Freshman parietal rules to conform with upperclass regulations, Marc E. LeLand '59, head of the subcommittee backing the proposal, said last night.
LeLand will see Dean von Stade today or tomorrow in the first step toward getting a faculty vote.
The Committee's resolution advocates the extension of parietal hours to 11 p.m. Saturdays and nights before holidays, and retaining of the present hours from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday.
After contacting von Stade, Leland will talk the members of the Faculty Administrative Board in anticipation of a vote by the entire faculty. Though the Committee realizes that it took the Houses several years to get the evening extension, it hopes to have the extra hours approved by the Jubilee Weekend on April 28.
R. Haney Scott 3G, secretary of the Union, said he would help the group contact the necessary faculty members but added he felt fairly indifferent toward the proposal. LeLand said that none of the proctors he had contacted had opposed the proposal.
Reasons Cited
"The introduction of upperclassmen into the Yard next year has made this spring an especially appropriate time to have the parietal regulations made consistent throughout the College," he added. The other reason for the extension he believed was the especially low morale of the freshman class at the present time. He also said that he saw little reason for the present "discrimination" against freshmen.
