Paul L. Scher '57 will recommend to the Student Council tonight that the Freshman Smoker be abolished. The Council will act on his proposal at its meeting, but it is understood that Scher's rather severe bill will be defeated.
In his bill, Scher, Secretary of the Council, proposes that after the Smoker "is abolished," either the administration or the student body substitute another class activity. He stated last night, however, that he wanted the Smoker abolished "immediately," whether or not any definite substitute is planned.
A very reliable Council source predicted yesterday that Scher's proposal "was certain to be defeated." It is further understood that the Freshman Union Committee will consider "the future of the Smoker" at its meeting tomorrow.
Scher said that one of the main reasons for his bill was the number of freshmen who have been injured at the Smoker in the past three years. He also said that students have shown "disrespect" for entertainers, and that the dwindling attendence of the Smokers has resulted in "financial loss."
Possible Substitutes
As possible substitutes for the Smoker he suggested a class dinner in the Union with waitresses, sherry, and brandy, to be followed by an informal social period in Sanders. He also said that entry parties could be used as a substitute.
The Council will also take action tonight upon a petition asking the group to recommend to the Faculty Committee on Athletics the reintroduction of boxing as an Ivy League sport.
The petition bears the signatures of 45 undergraduates and asks the sport be resumed at Harvard after a lapse of 18 years. It was not known last night what action the Council might take, although it has the alternatives of endorsing, rejecting, or by-passing it.
