Sailors Will Hold Drive to Finance Boathouse Plans

The Yacht Club has taken definite action toward the erection of a boathouse, William Owens '57, president, said yesterday. Plans for the proposed building are now on the drawing boards at the Graduate School of Design.

The plans, which will be completed in two or three months, will keynote a drive for funds to finance the project. Although sailing is sponsored by the H.A.A., the club must provide the funds and endowment necessary to build and maintain the boathouse.

A favorable site, just north of the Harvard Bridge, on the Cambridge side of the Charles, has been chosen, but the property has not yet been leased from the Metropolitan District Commission. Club officials have approached Charles W. Greenough, head of the commission, but as yet he has granted no official permission.

The club and the sailing team now use the M.I.T. boathouse in the south basin of the Harvard Bridge. Lack of its own facilities has limited club activity to three afternoons per week.

Although the club has never had a boat house or even boats of its own, it has produced three national championship sailing teams.
