McKay to Remain With Amherst as Morse Professor

AMHERST, Feb. 6--Donald C. McKay, professor of History, currently a visiting lecturer at Amherst, will remain here permanently next year as Anson D. Morse Professor of History. His naming follows the part-time appointment of Henry Steele Commager, professor of American History at Columbia, announced last week.

The appointment was announced by the Amherst Board of Trustees and will go into effect July 1.

But for Harvard, McKay's move poses serious problems, according to Myron P. Gilmore, professor of History and chairman of the History Department. No substitute has been found to replace McKay in teaching History 133 (Europe 1914-1950), two other undergraduate courses, and at least one graduate seminar.

From 1946 to 1952, McKay served as chairman of the University Committee on International and Regional Studies.
