Kirk Douglas, selected by the Lampoon as the worst actor of the year, retaliated in a telegram yesterday.
The telegram read: "I have just received news of your award. I take the long view expressed by the 18th century poet John Wolto, who said: 'What rage for fame attends both great and small, better be damned than not mentioned at all.'"
