Varsity swimmers split the difference between Princeton's efforts and the record books at the I.A.B. on Saturday night. They didn't set any of the expected new Crimson marks, but they soundly defeated the Tigers, 57 to 27, winning every event except the backstroke.
In the preliminary, the freshmen fell to a superior Williston Academy team, 47-31. The Yardlings could win only three of the nine races.
Chouteau Dyer came within two-tenths of a second of his Crimson record for the 50-yard freestyle in the varsity meet. His 22.6 gave him the edge over Jay Evans of Princeton and the Crimson's Gus Johnson.
Dave Hawkins of the Crimson led teammate Sigo Falk to the finish of the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:31.4, three-tenths of a second off Hawkins' record for the varsity. The Tigers' Pat Shannon never threatened second place.
Dyer's and Hawkins' times were the varsity's best assaults upon the record books. Five other Crimson clockings were within four seconds of standing marks, however.
Captain Jim Jorgensen had to reach back to touch on a turn in the 220 but still won the race in 2:10.2. His record is 2:07.8. Dyer swam the 100 in 51.3, six-tenths of a second over the mark he holds jointly with Jorgensen. Jorgensen quickly came back with a 440 time of 4:45 flat, one and one-half seconds slower than his record for that distance.
Stone Wins Dive
The finest event of the night was the three-meter dive, in which the Crimson's Greg Stone, back on the three-meter board, returned to his smooth form in totalling 77.6 points to best Princeton's Remington Ball. Duane Murner took third for the varsity.
Grif Winthrop of the Crimson provided the greatest excitement if the evening in the 200-yard individual medley. He brought the crowd to its feet as he came from behind in the final freestyle leg to the dive for '59's only individual victories. individual victories in their meet. Ed Walsh, Gene Proctor, Gorman, and Seaton teamed to win the 200-yard freestyle relay for the freshmen in 1:38.5.
