Eager young men with practiced smiles and long pencils will sit at dining hall entrances today, conducting a poll on the merits and feasability of a midsemester vacation. Run by student council, the vote is an attempt to show the administration that the proposed between-term break is not only needed, but actively wanted.

Before the administration and faculty vote on the suggestion, however, the College must suggest from where the extra days for the vacation are to come. There are two basic alternatives. The first--to start the school term earlier--will gain little favor from either the working or the pleasure-loving. The other possibility--and the easier one to put into effect--is the shortening of the three week spring reading period. A side issue is whether or not Thanksgiving should become a legal four-day weekend at the expense of a few days from the summer vacation. Such a sacrifice seems unnecessary since those who need the vacation seem to take it anyhow.

If the polling ends as expected, the Council will send the administration a recommendation favoring the mid-year break. Following this should come a rapid and favorable vote by the administration and then by the entire faculty.
