Michigan Food Riot

Between 400 and 500 University of Michigan students, shouting "We want good food," rioted in their dormitory dining halls yesterday.

The demonstrators heaved plates of asparagus and vanilla pudding at each other and the walls until police closed food lines and cleared the dining halls. Outside, the rioters rocked cars and threw snowballs at the police.

A student representative said the students objected to the "low-cost, starchy meals," which had been served since September. A dining hall official maintained, however, that he had received no previous complaints.
