Accurate shooting and superior height overcame a very aggressive Tufts five last night as the Crimson basketball team took its second consecutive game, 71 to 59, before a noisy Medford crowd of 400 people.
The varsity averaged 49 percent in field goals to gain a 40 to 29 lead in the first half, and then held on with a phenomenal 15 free throws in 17 attempts during the latter half.
In a well balanced attack, four players scored 13 or more points apeice. Captain Ike Canty, using his left-handed hook shot effectively, led the team with seven baskets and 16 points. Dick Hurley netted 14 while Dick Woolston and Bob Hastings each hit for 13.
The game was marked by rough playing, as the referees were so hesitant to call charging fouls that Tufts' two scoring stars, Phil Shaw and Captain Bert Muench, often drove through the defense with no apparent opportunity to get off even a fair shot.
This bothered the Crimson only intermittently, and for most of the contest it was able to hold the Jumbo's key players under control. Pete Stanley, a lanky 6-6 center, was the only other The Jumbos jumped into the lead after Hastings opened the scoring, and was ahead or tied until the nine minute mark. Then Hastings hit with a lay up to put the Crimson in the lead, 17-16. Muncaster added a free throw, Canty a two-pointer, Muncaster two more quick free throws, and Woolston a field goal to increase the margin to 24-16. The Jumbo's pulled to within a point 28-27, as Shaw paced the rally with 7 of his 17 markers, before the Crimson took charge in the closing minutes of the first half. Using the fast break after grabbing a rebound, the varsity tallied 12 points to their opponent's two, for the halftime 40-29 score. In the second half Tufts never came within five points of the varsity, which relied on free throws to take it out of trouble. In one stretch Hurley scored all the team's points, with six straight free throws and a field goal. The margin jumped from six to ten points until the 15 minute mark, when Hastings dropped in four straight free throws to put the game out of reach. The team froze the ball for the final three minutes. * * * * * The freshman basketball team lost its second contest in two outings last night, falling victim to a 73-50 beating by Tufts' freshman five.
