The ghost of football season's past returns to Boston this afternoon when the Boston Tobacco Table--a group of tobacco business men in the local area--present their annual award to the unsung football hero of the 1955 season.
Last year varsity tailback Frank White was so honored. Indications are that this year the presentation will go to a non-Harvard athlete.
Bob Grior, the much publicized Negro halfback for the University of Pittsburgh, has earned the respect of North and South alike after his performance in the Sugar Bowl against Georgia Tech on New Year's day. He was repeatedly cheered during the game and received praise from all for his performance, despite his being involved in the penalty against Pitt which set up Tech's only and winning touchdown of the game.
The varsity swimming team, which opens its season this Saturday against Cornell at Ithaca, remains undisturbed on hearing that the Big Red swimmers spent the vacation practicing at Fort Lauderdale, Florida. No formal workouts for the team were held in the I.A.B. although a few members practiced on their own.
The local basketball team is in an unaccustomed position--at the top of the Ivy League. The team's December victory at Cornell put it there, but it will be quite a job to maintain the perfect record when Dartmouth, Penn, and the Big Red again are met next week.
INCIDENTAL INTELLIGENCE: The ice hockey rivalry between Brown, and the Crimson sextet--the oldest in the Ivy League--started in 1898. The two teams formally open the league competition one week from this Saturday at Watson Rink.
