Fellow scientists, former students, and friends of Henry B. Bigelow, professor of Zoology, yesterday celebrated the famed marine biologist's 50 years of work in his field with a reception at the Museum of Comparative Zoology.
Those honoring Bigelow presented him with a special volume of scientific papers written for the occasion, describing current research in the study of the sea and its life forms.
Now 75, the oceanographer has most recently made a study of sharks and skates in the western Atlantic. Twenty-five years ago, Bigelow was a founder of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, of which he was for many years president and director.
Bigelow joined the faculty in 1906 and retired from active teaching in 1950, but continues his research work.
