THE SPORTING SCENE

Through the Summer, into the Fall

In the middle of June the varsity baseball team recovered from a 5-1 defeat from Yale to defeat the Eli's on their home diamond, 4-2, in the final game of a three-game serias. Andy Ward was the opening pitcher in the defeat. Captain elect Rossano had the honors in the last game. Harvard lost the first game in the EIBL play-offs.

June 17 was a sad day for Crimson oarsmen. For the first time since 1935 the Yale crews swept to a triple victory over Harvard. Even the Eli combination crew defeated the Crimson eight the day before.

The varsity finished five seconds behind Yale in the time of 20:10, while the Crimson JV boat covered the shorter two-mile course in 10:01, or two lengths off the pace. The Yardlings were clocked in 9:49.

Number four oarsman Geoffrey Locke won the Bruce Finley Vanderveer Trophy which goes annually to the man making the greatest contribution to the freshman boat. Junior Jack Lapsley was elected varsity captain for the 1956 season.
