Konrad Adenauer, Chancellor of the West German Republic, has received an invitation from the University to receive an honorary degree in June, West German Government sources reported last night.
The United Press dispatch from Bonn said the Chancellor would probably visit the United States next month and may confer with President Eisenhower.
Officials were uncertain whether Adenauer had yet accepted the invitation to Commencement exercises in Cambridge, but he will probably do so if the conference with Eisenhower can be arranged during his visit.
Informed sources yesterday said he would welcome an opportunity to meet with Eisenhower again, particularly in view of the present concern in West Germany over an apparent Communist scheme to neutralize a united Germany. This concern is felt despite assurance from the Western Allies that they will oppose any such move, a West German government spokesman said yesterday.
Adenauer, who last visited the United States in 1954, is vacationing at present but is expected to return to Bonn on Thursday. He was last in Cambridge in April of 1953 on part of a tour of the United States with President emeritus Conant, now America's Ambassador to the West German Republic.
It is assumed that Conant, who spent three days in Cambridge last February estensibly on a personal visit, arranged that the offer be made to Adenauer at that time.
If Adenauer is unable to attend Commencement exercises on June 16, he will have to await another invitation from the Corporation before an honorary degree will again be available from the University.
