Only those 'Cliffedwellers living in off-campus houses will be able to have private telephones by next September, Emily B. Lacey, Dean of Residence, announced yesterday, as students living in brick dormitories will have to wait until the middle of the year for the laying of a cable from Central Square to Radcliffe.

The New England Telephone and Telegraph Company said that installation of private phones and additional lines in the brick dormitories probably will be delayed until January.

Richard T. Martell, manager of the Cambridge office, said that while the existing cables would be sufficient to handle the additional lines to Gilman, Saville, Edmunds and Everett, wiring all the other dormitories "required an elaborate cable job, since the phones will be custom-made exchanges."

The new cable is in the process of engineering now, Martell said, since the engineers have to study all the paths available before the cable can be laid.
