The varsity tennis team, disregarding the monsoon, has traveled to New York, where it will meet Columbia today for the first of two weekend away matches. Tomorrow the Crimson will oppose mediocre Pennsylvania.

Though hampered by lack of practice this week, the varsity should have little trouble in defeating a weak Lion team, which has yet to win a match. In four outings Columbia has lost to Princeton (9-0), Navy (9-0), Pennsylvania (6-3), and Army (7-2). The varsity has beaten both Navy and Army in compiling an over-all record of 5 wins and 4 losses.

Since there have been no test matches during the week, due to the rain, Coach Jack Barnaby will probably use the same line-up that he used against Army last Saturday.

Gravem Favored

At number one, Ham Graven, who has a 2-1 season's record, should take Columbia's captain, Pete Chase, whose backhand is reputedly weak, Captain Alex Haegler, playing two, will meet Chauncey Bartholet, while Brooks Harris will face Paul Bartholet at three.

The Crimson's most consistent winner, Conrad Fischer, will meet Dick Standel in the number four match. Fischer's steady play, including an impressive showing against powerful Presbyterian, has led Barnaby to call him "a vastly improved player, one who always fights."

Dan Mayers, at five, is expected to have little difficulty with the Lions' Dick Biandel, who game has been erratic. Mayers, on the other hand, has fairly steady ground strokes, and a good net game. Playing six, the varsity's Maynard Canfield oppose John Suarez.
