More Freshmen Use More House Dining Halls Under Ticket System

Houses other than Adams have shown a marked increase this year in the number of freshmen attending meals, William A. Heaman, manager of the University dining halls, announced yesterday.

Although the Adams dining hall continues, this year, to attract the largest number of freshmen, attendance at all of the other Houses has in some cases doubled last year's figures. Yardlings visiting Dunster increased from 453 in '54 to 711 this year; Eliot, from 427 to 745; Kirkland, from 265 to 609; Leverett, from 273 to 479; Lowell, from 531 to 845; and Winthrop, from 436 to 717. Adams has gained but 66 over its two-week '54 total of 910.

Last year, during the first two weeks of freshman eating privileges, Adams had more than twice as many visitors as any other House except Lowell.

Total Increased

The total number of freshmen eating in the Houses has also shown a large increase over the total for last year. While 3,295 attended House meals during the first two weeks last year, 5,082 have done so this year.

Concurrent with the big change this year is the revised freshman eating plan which is designed to remedy the previously unequal distribution of visiting freshmen. The Yardlings are allowed one meal a week in each of the Houses, and consequently must attend more than one House to take advantage of their eating privileges.

The Crimson Key Society also inaugurated this year a House orientation program consisting of entry meetings and guided tours of the Houses, to acquaint the Yardlings with all of the Houses and the House system in general.
