Four Yale Deans allocated 1,000 freshmen among the Colleges in only five hours last week, Freshman Dean Whiteman said yesterday. This first step in the new experimental application system saved over a week compared to the old preferential method.
Since the members of the Class of '58 were not allowed to indicate any College preference, more than 50 percent applied in groups of up to nine students. Formerly, groups of up to four could apply to a particular College of their choice.
In accordance with the new procedure--called "much simpler" by Whiteman--applications were made on I.B.M. cards, which were fed into a machine that made an impartial selection. The new system is designed to give each College a cross-section of the freshman class.
The College Masters may face serious problems in assigning students to rooms within the College, however, since the machine does not consider the number of available rooms of various sizes in each College.
