The Memorial Drive headquarters of the Buildings and Grounds Department will probably be converted to a dormitory for married students next spring, Administrative Vice President Edward Reynolds '15 said yesterday.

Confirming reports that the Department would move to new facilities, Reynolds said the University will build a new one-story industrial building behind the Stadium to house it and possibly three other University departments.

He denied rumors that the Administration is considering using the site for a student garage next to Dunster, however, since Cambridge zoning laws forbid that type of structure in this section.

"I'm quite sure that the building is too valuable to tear down for plan student parking," he said. "And actually the public need in this zone is to upgrade the property along the Charles."

The new service building, to be built on North Harvard St. new April or May, will be designed to allow future expansion for the University Bindery, the University Press, and the Purchasing Department.

Move Across the River

Reynolds said the Purchasing Department, at 22 Dunster St., will be moved across the Charles when construction is begun, on the proposed Hygiene Buildings, probably to be located between Dunster, Mount Auburn, and Holyoke streets.

He added, however, that no plans have yet been made to vacate the present Bindery building on Memorial Drive, although this department could be moved at any time.

One of the main reasons for constructing the new service building across the river is to relieve the congested College area of University delivery trucks, as the building will also serve as a receiving and shipping center.

The one-story structure was first proposed after Buildings and Grounds officials learned that an extensive addition to their present buildings would be necessary to meet the department's expanding needs. Cecil A. Robert's, Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, is drawing up plans for the new location.
