LINING THEM UP

Yardlings Look Good

The winter sports season is still in its infant stage, and the natural tendency of any coach at this time is to be ultra-conservative about prospects. This tendency applies even more to freshman coaches, since many of them have only seen their boys for about two weeks.

Nevertheless, no matter how early, an analysis of the seven freshman winter sports is not out of place. The run-down will include a general picture of the team's future as a whole and individual players who stand out.

BASKETBALL

Although the squad showed very well in last night's game with Northeastern, Coach Bruce Munro still feels that it "has a long way to go. But the boys are well-advanced for this stage of the season," he added.

Griff McClellan, 6-8 rebound artist, looks very good both of the boards and in the pivot. Alex Christ and George Harrington, starting guards, provide the necessary speed for the Crimson fast break. The pair followed McClellan closely in last night's scoring totals. "Our schedule is a little tougher this year," Munro concluded, "but things look pretty good right now."

SWIMMING

Coach Bill Brooks hasn't had a chance to shape his Yardling team yet, but four freshmen already stand out. Dick Seaton look strong in the 440 and 220 free style. "He hasn't learned to sprint, but why teach him when he's so good in the longer events," Brooks commented.

Bill Murray, in the individual medley, and Jim Stanley, in the butterfly, are "looking very good." Off the board, Brooks has Frank Gorman, "one of the best looking divers to enter Harvard, and one of the finest prospects in the country," according to Coach Charley Batterman.

TRACK

"This is one of the best, if not the best Yardling squads we've had at Harvard," Coach Al Wilson predicts.

The main strength of the squad lies in the middle and distance runners. Bill Gillen and Dave Spinney look good in the 1000 yard run, while Jim Schlaeppi and Jack Brown deserve mention in the two mile run. Al Gordon and Dave Rosenthal and Joel Landan excel in the dashes.

A line-up of the other four Yardling teams will appear tomorrow.
