Cambridge police will tow away all cars parked in blatant violation of existing ordinances in the future, City Councillor Marcus Morton, Yale '16, vowed yesterday. He introduced a resolution to this effect into the City Council this week.
Morton said that flagrant violations of parking laws have caused "intolerable" conditions on city streets, and that towing offenders' cars away was the only practical solution. Under his proposed regulations, police and private garage trucks would do the towing.
Cars parked on bridges, in front of driveways, or obstructing traffic in any way would automatically be towed away under Morton's proposal. Frequent violators could, however, be towed away from fraction of parking regulations, including all overnight parking.
The proposed ordinance would give Police Chief Patrick F. Ready the power to determine towing charges. Morton said, however, they should be on a par with ordinary garage rates. If police tow trucks cannot cope with the illegal parkers, Morton would have Ready empower private garages to do the city's towing.
At present, the Ellery Garage does the city's towing jobs at a minimum cost to operators of $6.50.
