The Scott Club gained a place in the finals of the Ames Competition by defeating the Gardner Club in the semi-final round last night.
Richard F. Newell and Hal F. Reynolds successfully defended their case before a panel of three judges: J. Edward Lumbard of the United States Court of Appeals, second circuit, and Raymond W. Ellis and John R. Hally, practicing lawyers in Massachusetts.
The other half of the semi-finals will be held Wednesday when Morgan Law will meet Hardee-Sachs for the right to face Scott in the spring finals. An associate justice of the Supreme Court, not yet selected, will judge the final round.
Members of the Scott Club who prepared the brief for the case are: Scribner L. Fauver, James A. Foltz, Frank C. Gardner, Bengt H. Kjellgren, Karl C. Lomp, and Arthur W. Mudge.
Oralists for the Gardner Club were Robert S. Jones and Curtis W. Poole. They were assisted in the brief by John R. Alger, William D. Gaillard III, Wallace M. Kain, D. Kenneth MacDonald, David H. Roenisch, and H. Simmons Tate, Jr.
Last night's case concerned a group of Negro workers charging the defendant corporation with discrimination in its housing development. The judges deliberated for 10 to 15 minutes before deciding on the winner. As usual, there was no actual decision on the law in question.
