McNiff Says Student Cooperation Improves Library's Circulation

Undergraduate co-operation with Lamont Library has been responsible for increased availability of Desk 3 books, Philip J. McNiff, Assistant Librarian of the University, said yesterday.

Of 40,000 books circulated by Lamont last month, only nine have not yet been returned. McNiff termed this a "fine achievement" enabling better service by the library.

The reason for this improvement, McNiff said, may be partially due to the system of fines instituted three years ago. Fines on reserve books are now 25 cent per hour, with a maximum of two dollars the first day overdue, and one dollar per day every day thereafter. Prior to 1953, a two dollar fine was the maximum for a reserve book.

There were less books circulated from the library this Oct., however, than in the same period last year.
