Student reactions to proposals for changes in the Freshman Smoker were mixed yesterday. Most students contacted felt that the Administration had "a good idea" in changing the present Smoker, but objected to its vow to crack down to prevent a repetition of last year's "blast."

The Administrators last week proposed a Smoker similar to Boston Pops concerts, with entertainment and drinking taking place simultaneously in Memorial Hall.

M. Mark Earle '59, chairman of this year's Union Committee, stated the need "to hold a 'blast-type' Smoker on an appropriate level, if necessary, in the dormitories." He added that, "This would cause the affair to lose its place as a class party."

The master of ceremonies at last year's Smoker, Larry R. Johnson '58, felt that "the Administration is over-emphasizing the 'blast' tendencies of the 1955 party. The Pops idea," he continued, "would be a better way of holding a real class party." Johnson objected to the fact that the Freshmen, acting through their Smoker Committee, might not have the right to determine the form of Smoker they want.
