People crossing over the Charles River Saturday night saw a sight they would not ordinarily expect to see on a weekend evening. In the river was an automobile owned by College student Richard F. Coyne '57.

Coyne said that he had parked his car near the boathouse during the football game, and when he came back after the contest ended, he was unable to start his car. He left it there and headed back to Leverett House, planning to return later.

At 10:45 p.m., a passer by reported to the Metropolitan Police that a car was sinking in the river. Coyne arrived with his date and friends about 11 p.m., to find his car missing and a patrol boat making preparations to search the river for bodies.

When rescue crews finally dragged the car from the river, a suitcase containing expensive clothing was discovered missing. Investigations revealed that the car had been in the water no longer than an hour, and the night watchman at Nowell Boat House said he had seen the car on the embankment at 7 p.m.
