LINING THEM UP

Decimated Ruggers Rebuild

Last spring the Crimson ruggor team walked away with Bermuda's Inter collegiate Cup, and finished a close second to the only non-college side in the Eastern Rugby League. Exactly four of the fifteen that made headlines in Bermuda will be around to play in the season's opener with M.I.T. here on, Saturday.

Graduates, injuries, and the demands of Lloyd Jordan have all had a share in decimating last spring's squad, but Harvard has imported enough experienced ruggor players to make club president Art Tielmor quite happy about the fall's prospects.

Turning out for practice last week were four South Africans, several Englishmen and Canadians, as well as men from Iran, Ireland, Pakistan, the Philippines, and even the United States.

Three of the four veterans expected to be on the field this Saturday are from the Union of South Africa. Business student Martin Lindsay is back at his old position of wing forward, but Lionel Bryer and John Chaisty, who in 1954 were playing for Oxford University and Transvaal Province respectively, may be starting in unaccustomed roles.

Terry Turner and Brady Williamson, the only other two men available who have their colours (rugby's substitute for a letter) are likely to form the front row of the scrum with Ridge Morgan.

With a combined weight of 440 pounds, Canadian law student Don McDonald and Ireland and the Business School's Mike Corrigan are good prospects for an outstanding second row. Leading contenders for the other two forward positions are Stu Nickerson and Dmitri Marchessini.

While the forwards are fairly settled, there is still strong competition for places in the backs. Besides Bryer and Chaisty, the three most likely to play on Saturday are Matt Baig, who saw some action at scrum half last year, South African Pat Latham, the probably fullback, and Englishman Allen Hobson, at center.

Pete Palmer, Dick Hill, and Bob Leete may complete the three-quarter line, but Adam Raphael and Brent Kreelman on the wings, and Reza Majd and Tom Eldridge in the center are all strong possible, as is scrum half Mariano Ezpeleta.
