The varsity swimming team opens its home season against M.I.T. in a meet that will provide a severe test. What coach Hal Ulen will be testing, however, in his untried men and his ability to keep down the score. The inquiry begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Blockhouse.
Tech has one of its weakest teams in recent years. This season it has beaten Tufts, but it lost badly to Amherst, the University of Connecticut, and Wesleyan.
Furthermore, when the Engineers troop across Cambridge to face a Strong Crimson squad, they will be leaving their only star, backstroker Bob Janown, home studying.
"The sophomores will get a chance to prove their mottle," Ulen said. "I'll do some juggling to find out about the lesser-known souls."
Betwood the unknowns and the knowns, there will be some hard and flashy swimming at the I.A.B. pool this evening, all of it one sided.
