To the Editors of the CRIMSON:
The story in the January seventh CRIMSON about the investigation of communist activity in New Hampshire contained a statement about Alan R. Sweezy '29 which is completely erroneous and should not be allowed to pass unchallenged. The sentence in question read, "It was believed, however, that he (Alan Sweezy) was dismissed for his self-avowed communist activity."
The Walsh-Sweezy case was a complicated matter which need not be discussed here. The facts are, however, that Alan Sweezy, was not dismissed, and, much more important, that he was not engaged in any communist activities and never, of course, "self-confessed" to any such activities.
The CRIMSON'S misstatement was unintentional, I am sure, but this kind of carelessness is regrettable. As one of Alan Sweezy's friends I am concerned to try to keep the record straight. W. J. Bender
