President emeritus James B. Conant '14 will not return to Cambridge to accept an honorary degree this Commencement because of his responsibilities as High Commissioner of Germany.
But former Provost Paul H. Buck, professor of History, will probably receive such an award at the proceedings tomorrow.
Buck served as Dean of the Faculty from 1942 to 1945, when he assumed the additional duties of Provost of the University. He retired from this post in 1953.
As an expert on American history of the Civil War era, he still holds his professorship. He wrote the Pulitzer Prize-winning book, "The Road to Reunion," published in 1937, and is a co-author of the new "Harvard Guide to American History."
Since honorary degrees must be accepted in person, Conant will have to wait for the citation traditionally awarded retired Presidents a year after they vacate their position.
