Yale edged a Crimson court tennis team, 4 to 3, to win the James H. Van Alen Intercollegiate Trophy on the Long Island court of John H. Whitney over the weekend. The Elis previously advanced to the finals of the Big Three tournament by beating Princeton.
Harvard's Haddon Tomes proved himself the outstanding individual in the tourney, however, by gaining straight set victories in the singles and doubles. His doubles partner was Mike Ward, who went three tough sets before losing his singles match.
In all, three of the four Eli wins came in close three-set matches. The Crimson's third victory was turned in by Bill Wister. Losers for Harvard included Nick Luddington and Jim Moseley in the singles and the doubles combination of Wister and Luddington in the deciding match.
