Bronson M. Potter '56 won first prize in the annual Advocate Short Story Contest, Allen K. Grossman '55, president of the magazine, announced yesterday. The winner receives an award of $50.
Second prize, an award of $25, went to Naomi Ellenbogen '54.
The publication's literary board chose the winning stories from approximately 70 entries. The number of works submitted this year was among the largest in the magazine's history.
Both stories will be printed in the Advocate's special Commencement issue.
This issue will also include the prizewinning poems from last month's Garrison Poetry Contest. Walter J. Kaiser '54 won the top award in this competition, which annually includes the best poetry written by the College's undergraduates.
Potter's winning story, "Spades," is a naturalistic work on emotions experienced in factory life. Ellenbogen, in her story, pictured the impact of conditions in postwar Israel on a middle-class family.
