"I've seen worse lacrosse," Bruce Munro told his team after it topped the Boston Lacrosse Club 12 to 3 yesterday, "but I can't remember when."
Rain cancelled the Middlebury game on Saturday and the team was definitely rusty after its weekend layoff, but it wasn't as bad as Munro's psychology would make it out. Passing, pickups, extra-man plays, and midfield-attack coordination were all below par, but there were bright spots.
Ed Curtis tossed in four goals, one into an empty cage, two solos, and one on a pass from Todd Goodwin. He also assisted on goals by Johnny Lane and Dexter Lewis for the outstanding individual showing of the day. Phil Waring couldn't hit the cage for most of the game, but put on a late spurt which netted him three scores and an assist. Monk Aiello had two goals, one assisted by Dexter Lewis, the other by Waring.
The defense kept the visitors scoreless till well into the third period when Sam Stowell passed goalie John Ogden, Steve Den Hartog turned in the first half shutout and sparked the clearing. Fred Scharf was back in action after separating his shoulder on the Spring trip. Tom Crump, John Hartwell, Pat Esmiol, Paul Jones, and Scharf all played solid, dependable defense. It was the first time since 1952 that Munro has had more than three top flight defensemen in playing condition.
Of the returnees at midfield, only Jim Telfer seemed hampered by his injury. Tim Anderson and Albie Wells made their varsity debut with Dexter Lewis, a potentially strong line. They all have fine past records, but lack varsity experience. Wells and Anderson didn't play last year at all.
The freshmen meet M.I.T. at M.I.T. this afternoon at 3:30.
