Sophomore Dave Hawkins broke the Crimson breast stroke record for the third time this year and established a new pool mark to highlight the varsity swimming rout of Columbia, 69 1/2 to 14 1/2 at the I.A.B. on Saturday night. The undefeated Crimson has now won nine straight.

Coach Hal Ulen used his first-line men sparingly in order to give the rest of the squad the necessary points for letters, but the varsity still took both relays and all but one first and one second.

Hawkins' new record is the result of his butterflying 200 yards in 2:15.9. This time breaks the all-time Blockhouse pool mark of 2:16.1, set by LaSalle's J. .T. Verdur on March 20, 1948. It also betters Hawkins' own Crimson record of 2:18.0, which he established last week against Princeton.

Before this season, the best Crimson breast stroke time was 2:24.8, but Hawkins cut this down to 2:22 in the varsity's opener against Springfield on Dec. 12.

Pete Martin, in the 50-yard free style won Columbia's sole first place with a time of 24.1 Dave Orrik took the Light Blue's only second, trailing the Crimson's Jim Jorgenson's 53.2 in the 100. John Millard of the varsity and Martin tied for third in this event.

Crimson divers Peto Smails and Kirby Von Kessler scored 77.88 and 71.9 points respectively to top Columbia's Bruce Hoy off the low board. Bill Travis was the lone three-event man for the varsity, anchoring the victorious medley and free style relay teams besides placing second to teammate Duke Geer in the 440.
