Weak Lion Team Invades IAB Pool

Columbia swimming coach Ed Kennedy brings his 43rd Lion squad on a perfunctory 8 p.m. visit to the I.A.B. pool tonight and will undoubtedly lose to the Crimson for the 42nd time. In all his long career at Morningside Heights his teams have beaten the varsity only once, and that was a war-time victory.

Buried deep and winless at the bottom of the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League, Columbia is not likely to better its record in this, its last meet of the season. Seventh-place Pennsylvania topped the eighth-place Lions, 50 to 34; the Crimson swamped the Quakers, 67 to 17.

Columbia has a good diver in Bruce Hoy and two fair short distance swimmers in Pete Martin and Dave Orrik. Martin can do the 50 in 24 seconds and Orrik covers the 100 in less than 55 seconds. Beyond this triumvirate, the Lions have little strength.

After his sweeping victory over Princeton last Saturday, Crimson coach Hal Ulen will use this meet as a pre-Yale workout. His plans now, as all year long, are pointed towards New Haven next Saturday.

Both undefeated, the Crimson and Yale are tied for the lead in the EISL. Dartmouth is third and Navy, Army, and Princeton are tied for fourth. "I'd like to knock the Elis off the top of the coop," Ulen says.
