March's session of the Middle sex County grand jury ended yesterday afternoon without a move to indict Wendell H. Furry, professor of Physics, for violation of the Massachusetts Teachers' Oath Law.
"No evidence of that nature on any members of the University faculty was presented to the grand jury this month," District Attorney George E. Thompson's office said.
The District Attorney's office did reveal, however, that preliminary evidence against Furry had been examined by the February session of the grand jury. In order to allow the District Attorney time for further investigation, the jury will probably defer any final decision on a possible indictment until the April session, if not later.
Originally passed in 1935, the Teachers' Oath Law was amended in 1948. The present law requires teachers in Massachusetts educational institutions to pledge support of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the U.S. Constitution on penalty of a $1,000 fine.
