John T. Whatley '55 of Brookline was yesterday elected captain of next year's swimming team. He succeeds Charles J. Egan, Jr. '54.
Whatley saw considerable action this past season as a free-styler and as a member of the Crimson's 300-yard medley and 400-yard free style relay teams. Whatle's key performance came in the Dartmouth meet when he helped the 440-yard relay team beat the Green and avert a tie.
In all, Whatley swam in six winning relay teams. Among the other colleges he helped the varsity defeat are Princeton, Columbia, Navy, Army, and M.I.T. In the Navy meet a relay defeat would have meant the Crimson's first loss of the season.
Whatley also scored many points for the varsity in individual free-style events. He finished second in the 220-yard free-style races against M.I.T., Brown, and Penn, and won the 220 in 2:16.1 against Columbia late in the season.
