University faculty members who appeared in secret last month before the State Commission of Communism may be recalled to testily at a public hearing next week, it was learned last night.

The commission, which has been investigating communism both in education and in labor and industry, yesterday scheduled a hearing for next Thursday. The possibility that the group will recall one or more professor was suggested Wednesday night when the Boston Traveler stated that the communism inquiry is turning away from labor and back to education.

One of the University faculty members who would presumably be among next week's witnesses, Kirtley F. Mather, professor of Goology, said last night that he did not expect to be called.

"Just Investigating communists"

Philip G. Bowker, state senator from Brookline and chairman of the Commission, has refused to say exactly whom his group will call Thursday or whether the witnesses will be from labor or education.

"We're just investigating communists," said Bowker.

According to the article, the commission is likely to recall area professors because "some commission members want them to make a stand on the communist issue before the public."

But Mrs. Mary B. Newman, a member of the commission's education subcommittee and the wife of Edwin B. Newman, lecturer in Psychology, last night completely discounted the newspaper's report.

"The investigation will continue in its present path," she said.
