It was crispy cold this weekend in Hanover. The sporting events were close and hard fought, each Old Grad and student felt a compulsion to buy the next round, and even confirmed celibates found themselves with dates that someone else had brought. It was Winter Carnival.
The Queen of it all was Mary Ingalls of Smith, one of 1800 girls lured to Hanover by promises of a good, gay time. Almost none were disappointed. Instead, everyone agreed that this was one of the finest Carnivals in years. The disappointed few probably did not realize what good times they actually had.
Weeks of toil had produced brilliant snow statues in front of each fraternity house. And on the insides all was heat and clean, ready for the weekend blast and the serious business of having the good time that has been planned and looked forward to all fall.
Liberal Hosts
With a scant 45 invitations for outsiders alloted each fraternity, the non-Dartmouth turnout was rather poor. But the natives are extremely cordial both to guests and occasional gate-crashers. There are liquor, women, and a slap on the back for anyone looking at all disposed to be friendly, and the Dartmouths are liberal hosts.
Visitors left with the impression that Darmouth acquaintances are worth cultivating. There will be another Carnival next year.
