"We shouldn't have much trouble with Penn," says swimming coach Hal Ulen, but for the meet at Dartmouth, "The place is sold out--it's the death cry." Pennsylvania invades the Blockhouse pool at 8:30 tonight; the Green danger awaits the Crimson in Hanover at 2 p.m. Monday.
Meanwhile, Yardlings will face two tough squads over the weekend, traveling to Andover for a 2:30 p.m. Saturday contest and joining the varsity at Dartmouth on the holiday.
Penn has won six out of 11 meets this season, but while the Red and Blue is swimming one of its stronger teams, it holds only a 50 to 34 victory over the Brown squad which the Crimson sank, 70 to 14.
Ulen will save his strength against Penn because he certainly will have to spend it at Dartmouth. Several Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League coaches claim the Green will beat him.
Glover Stars
Dartmouth edged Army, 43 to 41, but it was an early-season meet and can't be compared to the Crimson's West Point victory of 56 to 28. The Green dropped Navy by the same score the varsity did, 45 to 39.
But Dartmouth has a junior swimmer named John Glover. Ulen calls him "the outstanding swimmer in the East." Glover "beat all the Yalies and broke all Dartmouth records" in the 100. John Heyn backs him up in this event and will probably take the 50-yard sprint himself.
Divers Face Test
Roy Coffin broke Dartmouth's backstroke record down at Princeton and, with Phil Pendleton, may surprise the varsity's All-American, Don Mulvey. Off the board Dartmouth has Jim Venman and Tuck Creamer, which means the Crimson divers will have to be good.
Ulen gives his medley team and Dave Hawkins in the breast stroke the winner's edge, but he feels the Dartmouth free style relay team of Glover, Hust, Mullins, and Heyn can break the Green record against the varsity.
Dartmouth has a 5 and 1 EISL record, having lost only to Yale. If the Crimson is to finish second, let alone first, this season, it will have to show well on Washington's birthday. Said Ulen, "It's going to be quite a swimming meet."
