American democracy as an active force is the only solution to possible Communist domination of India, Eleanor Roosevelt told the Society of Harvard Dames yesterday at Harkness Commons.
"Although the Russians only offer promises, a nation as wretched as India is likely to accept them," Mrs. Roosevelt said. Since no one can enter the Iron Curtain, America has a better opportunity to demonstrate the democratic ideal, she added.
Mrs. Roosevelt said Indian exchange students have had a considerable impact on India's conception of life in America. "Those students who spend a long enough time in the United States get a real feeling of the country," she explained.
"The people of India especially," she said, "will be able to live through the agonies of the moment in hopes that some day they will be able to share some of the wonders of the United States which they've heard about, but never seen."
