The winter sports season opened officially last week with the arrival of some five pounds of releases from the Yale Athletic Association.
For Yale's all American sports publicity agent Charley Loftus has switched his emphasis from the Yale medical room and its injury lists to the Eli Indoor gymnasium. Yale publicity is Loftus' job, and he does it well, but perhaps he does it too with an digressiveness and completeness which at times belies his college's membership in the newly formed Ivy League.
But as the postman will point out, publicity is not a seasonal thing-nor is it limited to a single sport.
For instance a recent release, entitled "SUGGESTED BOX," describes the Yale freshman swimming team:
Now Haven, Conn., Doc. 7-Yale's freshman swimming team, with a record varsity, as impressive as the nationally renowned varsity, will place a 117 consecutive dual meet skein on the line against Hamden High School tomorrow."
But sage Loftus realizes too that Hamden High and the Yale freshman swimming team have only limited appeal.
Therefore over recent years he has become a past master at the art of doing a home town story while at the same time pretty well covering various players' lives since grammar school. For instance:
"New Haven, Conn., Dec.6-Yale's preseason concern with the problem of key men for defense in hockey was a thing of the past today with the results of the Eli's opener against Northeastern now on the record books.
"In the weeks before the opener, Coach Murray Murdoch noted much of the eurrentl team's ability would 'depend in a large part upon the success of experiment tertian with the defense.' One of the host of candidates then mentioned was John Pointer, a ragged 5-10 sophomore.
". . . Time after time pioneer was instrumental in keeping Yale pressure in the offense zone. A key measure for every defenseman, is the time to know when to break back, and break back fast to stifle a two-or-more man down ice push.
"Again the former Andover captain was affective. Alert and moving into the play at the right instant, Pointer throttled several Northeastern scoring threats before materialization could be realized within the Yale zone.
"But defense was not always pointer's forte. during his career at Andover-covering a four season span-he moved from a fourth line forward slot up to first team and captaincy before graduation. As a member of the Yale freshman squad last year he was a first string defenseman-and by indication this early in the season has learned his hockey lessons well.
"In addition to hockey, he played soccer at Andover, and as a freshman for the Elis. His home is in Short Hills, N. J.
"But he's found a new home-on the blue line as a key performer and defense morale booster for the new aggressive Yale hockey team."
